I’m Daniel, an aspiring aviator and photographer. I like planes, radios, rally cars, space, camping, hiking, photography, and self-hosting.
Aviation
I’m training to eventually become an airline pilot, but the path is long, difficult, and expensive. I fly out of Republic Airport, whenever the weather is good (so, not often in the winter). When I do actually fly, it is always fun. I usually end up flying a Cessna 172S, tail number N526ER, which is a tiny aircraft in comparison to an airliner like an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737. Despite this, the fundamentals of flight transfer heavily between these aircraft.
Radio
Another hobby of mine is amateur radio. I got my Technician license in May of 2025. I honestly couldn’t tell you what compelled me to spend a couple of months studying for the exam, but now I have a callsign… but the more interesting thing is that I also now know a bunch of random stuff about radios!
Rally
I had a brief obsession with rally racing, and I would stay afterschool basically everyday to play DiRT Rally 2.0 on the driving simulator, which moves! Now, I do plan on going to a rally in Pennsylvania, so I still like rally, I just don’t obsess over it. It’s the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally to be specific, and I am wondering if I should just be a spectator or a volunteer.
Space
Space travel is cool. I like the Apollo missions because we were able to put 12 men on the moon, just because we wanted to. I think everything we did in the Apollo missions was remarkable. I mean we could set foot upon that dot in the sky we had only dreamed of reaching for thousands of years, with just 72 KB of ROM and 4 KB of RAM. My TI-84 calculator has more ROM. If the space race had continued, and we were further compelled to explore our universe, we would most likely have landed on Mars a long time ago. But, yeah spending trillions of dollars doing nothing on Earth sounds a lot more interesting.
Camping & Hiking
I like being outside, where it is truly quiet. It does provide a breath of fresh air (literally) from the hustle and bustle of the city. It also gives some beautiful landscapes to photograph and view.
Photography
Photos are cool. It’s basically just drawing with light, in fact photography means “drawing with light”. Photos can also be used as a tool to spread information and cause reform. For example, Ansel Adams, a famous photographer and conservationist, helped people understand the beauty that existed in national parks and know that it wasn’t just land to be exploited. Lewis Hines also used photography to inform people. He took photos of child laborers, revealing to the public the horrible conditions these kids had to face everyday. These photos led to the creation of labor laws protecting people from exploitative factory owners.
Self-Hosting
Yeah, I like having my own stuff and a website is one of those things. That’s it.
